The Rodent Problem in Pakistani Homes
Rats and mice are among the most destructive pests in Pakistan. They contaminate food, gnaw through wiring (a leading cause of house fires), damage furniture and walls, and spread diseases like leptospirosis and salmonella. A single pair of rats can produce up to 2,000 offspring in a year — so early action is critical.
Rodent bait (rodenticide) is one of the most effective tools for controlling rat and mouse populations, but it must be used correctly to be safe and effective.
Understanding Rodent Bait
Rodent baits contain an active ingredient that causes internal bleeding in rodents after ingestion. Modern anticoagulant rodenticides like brodifacoum (found in Klerat) are highly effective because rodents don't associate the bait with illness — they continue feeding until a lethal dose is consumed.
Waxblock formulations are ideal for Pakistan's climate because they resist moisture and humidity, maintaining palatability even in damp conditions like kitchens, drains, and outdoor areas.
What You'll Need
Our Complete Rodent Control Kit | Klerat Bait + 2 Rat Traps includes everything for a complete rodent control programme: professional-grade Klerat Waxblocks plus mechanical traps to maximise catch rates.
Step 1: Identify Rodent Activity
Before placing bait, confirm where rodents are active. Look for:
- Droppings (dark, pellet-shaped) along walls, in cupboards, or near food storage
- Gnaw marks on food packaging, wood, or wiring
- Grease marks (dark smears) along walls and skirting boards where rats travel
- Burrows in gardens, under slabs, or near drains
- Scratching or scurrying sounds at night
Step 2: Choose Your Bait Placement Locations
Rodents are neophobic — they're suspicious of new objects in their environment. Place bait along established runways (the paths they travel regularly), not in open areas.
Best placement locations:
- Along walls and skirting boards (rodents run close to walls)
- Inside cupboards and behind appliances
- Near entry points: gaps in walls, under doors, around pipes
- In roof spaces and under floors where activity is detected
- Near burrow entrances in gardens or outbuildings
Step 3: Use a Bait Station
Always place rodent bait inside a tamper-resistant bait station. This is critical for safety — it prevents children, pets, and non-target animals from accessing the bait while allowing rodents to enter freely.
- Secure the bait station to the floor or wall so it can't be moved
- Place it flush against a wall with the entrance holes facing the wall
- Label the station clearly: "Rodent Bait – Do Not Touch"
Step 4: Apply the Bait Correctly
- Wear gloves when handling bait — human scent can deter rodents
- Place 1–2 Klerat Waxblocks per bait station for mice; 2–4 for rats
- Do not place loose bait outside of a station
- Keep a record of where each station is placed
Step 5: Monitor and Replenish
Check bait stations every 3–7 days during the first two weeks:
- If bait is being consumed, replenish immediately — this means rodents are feeding
- If bait is untouched after 7 days, move the station to a different location
- Continue baiting until no bait is consumed for two consecutive checks
Step 6: Dispose of Dead Rodents Safely
- Wear gloves and use a plastic bag to pick up dead rodents
- Double-bag and dispose of in an outdoor bin
- Do not allow pets to eat dead rodents — secondary poisoning is possible
- Wash hands thoroughly after handling
Safety Precautions
- Never place bait in open areas accessible to children or pets
- Always use tamper-resistant bait stations
- Store unused bait in its original packaging, out of reach of children
- If accidental ingestion occurs, contact a doctor immediately and bring the product label
Preventing Future Infestations
Bait eliminates existing rodents, but won't stop new ones from entering. After treatment:
- Seal all entry points: gaps around pipes, cracks in walls, spaces under doors
- Store food in sealed containers — never leave food out overnight
- Keep rubbish bins sealed and away from the house
- Clear garden debris and woodpiles where rodents nest
