Why Cockroaches Are a Serious Problem

Cockroaches aren't just unpleasant to look at — they're a genuine health hazard. They contaminate food and surfaces with bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli, trigger asthma and allergies (especially in children), and spread rapidly once established. A single female German cockroach can produce up to 300 offspring in her lifetime.

In Pakistan's warm, humid climate, cockroaches thrive year-round — particularly in kitchens, bathrooms, drains, and behind appliances. The good news: with the right products and approach, you can eliminate them yourself.

Know Your Enemy: Common Cockroach Species in Pakistan

• German cockroach (Blattella germanica): Small, light brown, prefers kitchens and bathrooms. The most common indoor species and the hardest to control.
• American cockroach (Periplaneta americana): Large, reddish-brown, often found in drains, sewers, and basements.
• Oriental cockroach: Dark brown to black, prefers cool, damp areas like drains and under sinks.

Identifying the species helps you target the right areas and choose the most effective treatment.

Step 1: Inspect and Identify Hotspots

Cockroaches are nocturnal and hide during the day. Use a torch to inspect:

• Behind and under the refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher
• Inside kitchen cabinets and drawers, especially near food
• Under sinks and around plumbing pipes
• In bathroom cabinets and behind the toilet
• Along wall-floor junctions and in cracks and crevices

If you see cockroaches during the day, it's a sign of a heavy infestation — act immediately.

Step 2: Apply Cockroach Gel Bait

Gel bait is the most effective method for controlling German cockroaches and is the preferred tool of professional pest controllers worldwide. Cockroaches are attracted to the bait, consume it, and die — and because cockroaches engage in coprophagy (eating each other's droppings), the poison spreads through the population.

Step 4: Deny Entry and Harborage

Treatment works best when combined with exclusion. Cockroaches enter homes through drains, gaps around pipes, and cracks in walls:

• Seal gaps around pipes and cables where they enter walls
• Fix leaking taps and pipes — cockroaches need water to survive
• Use drain covers or plug drains at night
• Store food in sealed containers — never leave food or dirty dishes out overnight
• Empty rubbish bins daily and keep them covered
• Clear clutter — cardboard boxes and paper bags are favourite hiding spots

Step 5: Follow Up and Maintain

Check gel bait placements every 2 weeks and replenish as needed. Monitor traps weekly. Most infestations show significant reduction within 1–2 weeks of gel bait application, with full control achieved in 4–6 weeks.

For ongoing prevention, maintain a low-level bait programme — a few small placements in key areas — to catch any new cockroaches before they establish.

What NOT to Do

• Don't spray insecticide in the same areas as gel bait — repellent sprays scatter cockroaches and reduce bait uptake
• Don't apply bait in large blobs — small, frequent placements are far more effective
• Don't ignore the problem — cockroach populations double every few weeks if left untreated
