Khatmal ki pehchan, un ke katne ke nishan, aur kaunsa spray waqai asar karta hai – sab kuch aik jagah.
Few household pests cause as much frustration as bed bugs. You wake up with itchy red bumps, change the bedsheet, spray something from the market, and a week later the bites are back. In Pakistan, "bed bugs" is searched around 6,600 times a month and "bed bugs on bed" another 5,400 – a sign of how many families are fighting the same problem, especially in winter when heavy razai, blankets and closed rooms give khatmal more places to hide.
This guide helps you confirm whether you really have bed bugs, recognise their bites, understand why many sprays fail, and choose a treatment that kills bed bugs at every stage of life.
What Do Bed Bugs Look Like?
Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius), known in Urdu as khatmal, are small, flat, wingless insects that feed on human blood. You can recognise them at every stage:
- Adults: about 5 mm long – roughly the size of an apple seed. They are flat, oval and reddish-brown, and become rounder and darker red after feeding.
- Nymphs (babies): smaller and pale, almost transparent, turning bright red after a blood meal.
- Eggs: about 1 mm, pearly white and sticky, laid in clusters in seams and cracks.
Bed bugs cannot fly or jump. They crawl, hide during the day and come out at night to feed, usually for a few minutes, before returning to their hiding place.
Where Do Bed Bugs Hide in Pakistani Homes?
Most bed bugs live within a couple of metres of where people sleep or sit for long periods. Check these places with a torch:
- Mattress seams, piping, tags and the underside of the mattress
- Joints and screw holes of wooden bed frames and charpai frames
- Headboards, especially where they touch the wall
- Sofa seams, cushions and the gaps under sofa frames
- Folds of razai, blankets and stored bedding
- Wardrobes, drawers and suitcases
- Cracks in plaster, skirting, loose wallpaper and behind photo frames
- Electrical switchboards and sockets near the bed
Signs You Have Bed Bugs (Before You See One)
- Small rust-coloured or black spots on sheets and mattress seams – these are bed bug droppings.
- Tiny blood stains on pillowcases or sheets from crushed bugs.
- Shed skins – pale, empty shells left behind as nymphs grow.
- A musty, sweetish smell in rooms with a heavy infestation.
- Bites that appear overnight, especially in lines or groups.
What Do Bed Bug Bites Look Like?
Bed bug bites are usually small, red, raised and very itchy. They often appear:
- In a line or zig-zag cluster of three to five bites, because one bug feeds several times while moving along the skin
- On skin exposed during sleep – arms, shoulders, neck, face and legs
- In the morning, after a night's sleep
Reactions differ from person to person. Some people develop large itchy welts, while others show no marks at all – so one family member may be bitten every night while another notices nothing. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), bed bugs are not known to spread disease, but the itching, scratching and lost sleep can seriously affect health and wellbeing. See a doctor if bites become infected, blister badly or cause an allergic reaction.
Bed bug bites vs mosquito bites
| Bed bug bites | Mosquito bites | |
|---|---|---|
| Pattern | Lines or clusters of 3–5 | Random, single bites |
| When noticed | In the morning after sleep | Soon after being bitten, day or night |
| Location | Areas exposed in bed | Any exposed skin, often ankles |
| Other signs | Blood spots, droppings on sheets | Buzzing, mosquitoes visible |
Why Bed Bug Sprays From the Market Often Fail
Many families try three or four sprays before giving up. There are three common reasons:
- Eggs survive. Most insecticides do not kill bed bug eggs. If you spray once, new nymphs hatch about 1–2 weeks later and the problem returns.
- The spray misses hiding places. Spraying only the top of the mattress leaves bugs alive in frame joints, cracks and sofa seams.
- Resistance. Bed bug populations in many countries have developed resistance to some common household insecticides, so a quick knockdown spray alone may not be enough.
The solution is a two-part approach: a direct bed bug killer for active hiding spots plus a residual insecticide that keeps working on surfaces for weeks – and a repeat treatment to catch newly hatched bugs.
The Bed Bug Spray That Works: A Two-Part Treatment
Part 1: Kill active bed bugs where they hide
Supratox Bed Bug Killer is designed to penetrate deep into cracks, crevices and seams where khatmal hide, and works on eggs, nymphs and adults. It is low-odour and non-staining, so it is suitable for bedrooms, hostels and hotel rooms.

Part 2: Add long-lasting residual protection
ICON® 10WP by Syngenta contains 10% lambda-cyhalothrin in an easy unit-dose sachet. Mixed with water and sprayed on bed frames, furniture joints, skirting and wall cracks, it keeps working for up to 12 weeks, killing bed bugs that crawl over treated surfaces after they hatch.
The easiest option: the complete kit
Our Complete Bed Bug Control Kit puts both products together with a hand pressure sprayer, so you have everything for a full treatment cycle at home.

Step-by-Step Bed Bug Treatment Plan
- Prepare the room. Strip bedding, curtains and covers. Wash them in the hottest water the fabric allows (60°C or higher kills all stages) and dry in strong sun or on high heat. Seal clean items in plastic bags.
- Vacuum thoroughly. Vacuum the mattress, bed frame, sofa and floor edges, then empty the vacuum outside in a sealed bag.
- Treat hiding places. Apply Supratox to seams, joints, cracks and other active spots.
- Apply the residual spray. Mix ICON 10WP as per the label and spray bed frames, headboards, skirting, wardrobe corners and wall cracks. Do not soak the sleeping surface of the mattress.
- Let everything dry. Keep children and pets out of the room until surfaces are completely dry.
- Repeat after 10–14 days. This second treatment kills nymphs that hatched from eggs after the first round. Do not skip it.
- Monitor for 4–6 weeks. Check seams and sheets weekly. New spots or bites mean one more targeted round is needed.

Winter Tips: Keep Khatmal Out of Your Razai
- Before taking winter bedding out of storage, unfold it in sunlight and check the folds for bugs, eggs and spots.
- Wash or sun-dry quilts and blankets regularly during the season.
- Keep stored bedding in sealed bags or boxes, not loose in cupboards.
- Pull beds a few inches away from the wall so bugs cannot climb on from cracks.
- After travelling or staying in a hostel or hotel, keep your suitcase off the bed and wash clothes in hot water.
- Inspect second-hand furniture, mattresses and charpai carefully before bringing them home.
Bed Bug Myths
- Myth: Bed bugs only live in dirty homes. Fact: they feed on blood, not dirt. Clean homes and five-star hotels can have bed bugs too.
- Myth: You can starve them by leaving the room empty for a few days. Fact: bed bugs can survive for months without feeding.
- Myth: Throwing away the mattress solves the problem. Fact: bugs in the bed frame, sofa and walls will move to the new mattress. Treat the whole room instead.
- Myth: One spray is enough. Fact: you need a repeat treatment to kill bugs that hatch after the first round.
Safety First
- Always read and follow the product label.
- Wear gloves and a mask while mixing and spraying, and ventilate the room afterwards.
- Never spray directly on people, pets, pillows or baby cots.
- Do not use agricultural pesticides or "fumigation tablets" indoors – some of these release toxic gas and have caused deaths.
- Keep all products out of reach of children.
When to Call a Professional
A single room can usually be treated successfully at home with the right products and a repeat round. Consider professional help if the infestation has spread to several rooms or flats, if you run a hostel, hotel or guest house, or if bites continue after two complete treatment cycles. You can message Sipar on WhatsApp for advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I have bed bugs on my bed?
Look for small dark spots, blood stains, shed skins and tiny white eggs in mattress seams and bed frame joints, and bites in lines or clusters when you wake up.
What is the best bed bug spray in Pakistan?
The most reliable results come from combining a direct bed bug killer such as Supratox with a residual insecticide such as ICON® 10WP, applied twice 10–14 days apart. Both are included in our Complete Bed Bug Control Kit.
Can bed bugs live in a razai or blanket?
Yes. They hide in folds and seams of quilts and blankets, especially stored bedding. Washing in hot water or drying in strong sun helps kill them.
How long does it take to get rid of bed bugs?
Most single-room infestations are under control within 2–4 weeks if you treat thoroughly and repeat after 10–14 days.
Do bed bugs spread disease?
According to the CDC, bed bugs are not known to spread disease. Their bites can cause itching, skin irritation and sleepless nights.
